tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-201011002024-03-06T23:53:58.254-05:00FROM THE DESK OF SARAA Canadian small town girl from Northern Ontario, living just outside the Nation's capital. Happily married to PC, proud Mommy of two sweet boys, E and H. My desk is piled high with the tidbits of everyday life, read about it here!SChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04565235730734576436noreply@blogger.comBlogger853125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20101100.post-34363227296881148442013-06-17T07:36:00.000-04:002013-06-18T11:31:02.271-04:00Busy busy busy!It seems blogging opportunities are few and far between these days... and while I am not complaining (the blog will always be here), my sweet boys are growing up right before my eyes and are a main reason why I don't have the extra energy at the end of the day to record my thoughts on here like I use to.

I know because I like to write, that I'll get back to it more faithfully one day, but for now... it will be in bits and spurts! I appreciate that you still stop in from time to time... and hopefully a continued lull in posting means that life is just busy and full of fun.

For the last couple of months we've been busy with sports! Soccer and t-ball for E, and swimming for both boys on a weekly basis. To add to the chaos, PC and I are both playing ball on separate nights, and on rare occasions, PC even squeezes in some golf. E is having fun on the fields... he is really getting into t-ball and loves to play defense on the soccer field. H likes to cheerhis brother on and often works on the side lines to hone his own skills!
H is busy being a little boy... into everything he can get
his hands on, talking up a storm and raising hell at every check point! He keeps us on our toes, but we wouldn't have it any other way. I
am clinging to his baby ways as I know he is quickly outgrowing them. We have registered him for preschool in the fall (which also underlines that he is not a baby anymore) - his transition into that program should be interesting to say the least!
In the last little while we also celebrated Mother's & Father's Day! I love these special occasions because it reminds me how lucky we are to have our family life and all of its supporting pieces, including our parents who are hands-down fantastic grandparents. PC and I both enjoyed our special days and mainly because of our two boys who remind us daily how lucky we are to be their parents.
As I mentioned in an earlier post we've been watching a lot of curling over the winter, which for me is not unusual, but its the first winter that my big boy has also taken more notice of my love for the sport.

We watched Rachel Homan's run to the top of the Canadian podium and the a short week later, we tuned in faithfully to TSN's coverage of the Tim Horton's Brier to see Northern Ontario and Team Brad Jacobs put on a stellar performance to win the Canadian championship.

Growing up just outside of Sault Ste. Marie, it is only natural that my support goes to Team Northern Ontario. In the last few Briers its been fun to watch Team Jacobs evolve and improve and advance themselves into this year's Brier final. It was truly a lot of fun to watch the curling coverage all season long and see a range of difficult shots executed under tremendous pressure.

While my boys have always been around when curling is on the TV, I was overjoyed to hear my smart kindergartener asking lots of questions this year about the game.

'How come they have brooms, how come that guy holds his broom like that, how can she move like that on her shoes, how come they kicked the rocks'.

These questions were exciting to answer and I have to say by the end of the Tim Horton's Brier and Team Northern Ontario's reign, I would say we definitely have a future curler on our hands. E was pumped when I brought out my brooms to demonstrate the sweeping and the boys got right into it with their 'hurry haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard' and 'dig boys, dig dig dig' impressions.

It was a great couple of weeks watching the boys from the Soo work so hard to win the Brier and then to see them bring home a silver medal from Worlds was the icing on the cake. I truly admire their work ethic and commitment to the game of curling. I know they are still young and have many years ahead of them, but as a parent of future curling enthusiasts, I am so excited for the future of this game. Its great to know that there are excellent role models involved in the sport that my boys will grow up learning about and striving to be like - so thank you for all the fun this winter Team Jacobs - Team Northern Ontario - Team Canada.
I read it on my bed, and then moments later I cried... not because it was sad but just because I really do miss her. Reading this letter actually made me laugh out loud because I can hear her humour in the letter, and it brings me right back to her living room, sitting in her rocking chair and visiting with her over tea.

It was one of those moments as an adult that you just have, you have a little tear, your thankful to have had it and then you move on... or so I thought.

The next night I went to the grocery store and as I was rushing around the store to get my groceries before the place closed, my cart clipped a display of pastry type things and a box fell out in front of my cart. I thought it was a total accident, but when I went to picked them up, it was these....
Now - to most, these aren't anything too special, but to me they are a childhood memory that I will never forget. My grandmother use to offer me these while visiting at her house. For the longest time my Mom never bought them when I was young, so this treat was only something I got by visiting Grandma. The sponge cake, mixed with chocolate and the taste of caramel - it was the best, and seeing this box in front of my cart brought a smile to my face.

It was when I was driving home from the grocery store that I realized that same day was the anniversary of my grandmother's death. Can you believe that? I may have been watching one too many 'Long Island Medium' episodes, but I really do believe that my Grandma was trying to get my attention that day and I got the message loud and clear.

The two days of little triggers were a gentle reminder of what a special lady she was to me. The truth is I often don't need a reminder to prompt me to think about her as I do it almost every day, and even more often now that I have kids of my own. She was a wonderful grandmother to me and would have been an awesome Great-Grandma to my boys... not a day goes by that I don't try to share my memories of her with my boys as they truly are moments I cherish.

Thank you Grandma for the little reminder that you're still with me each and every day.

I love you.

We took the boys to this fine establishment last weekend. It was a little colder than in past years, but the simple pleasures were still very much enjoyed by our family.

The beautiful part about this season is that there is still a heavy layer of thick snow on the maple trail, which means the horses are still able to take patrons on a sleigh ride, opposed to a wagon ride that is more suitable when the weather warms up. The sleigh ride is absolutely beautiful, especially with the bit of extra snow fall we've had in the last couple of weeks - its truly a must when you're there!

We enjoyed a fabulous (all you can eat) buffet breakfast stacked full of the maple musts: pancakes with maple syrup, maple bacon, maple ham, maple baked beans, oreilles de crisse, and so much more. We were stuffed after eating, but we took a walk on the maple trail and made some room for the best part of the experience... maple taffy on the snow! While the boys ran off their maple energy on the grounds, I browsed the the gift shop which had some great little finds (and very courteous staff)!

If your looking for something to do with young children, or somewhere to take your parents and grandparents, or to meet up with a group of friends and family, Sand Road Maple Road will not disappoint. Admission to the grounds is free and you can expect loads of maple syrup products to be on hand for purchase!

Here's a few snapshots our trip last weekend! We had a blast!
The days seem to meld together and before I know it another week has passed and I have yet to even think about making a blog entry.

I'd like to say that this upsets me, but in reality, when I don't get to blogging, it means life is busy, and busy is good.

The past couple of months we've just been enjoying our hectic schedules of raising two boys. Nothing too overly exciting but we've gotten out and about with the kids, and now that spring like weather is almost here, I imagine we'll be spending out free time outdoors as much as possible.

This winter, we did a little sleigh riding, and although we skipped our annual canal outing, we did hit Snowflake Kingdom during Winterlude which did not disappoint any of us. The canal is closed for another year, and although it would have been nice to get out for a family skate, I know there will be many other years to enjoy this feature of the nation's capital!
Last weekend, E wrapped up another season of CanSkate. He is moving and shaking so well on both skates now. I have a feeling he'll be a great asset to any hockey team next season! H is about the only member of this family that wants to keep on shoveling. He is obsessed with his shovel and throws a royal fit if you rush him the house at the end of the day without a few minutes to 'chovel'! As much as I don't want to spend another second out in the cold at the days end, it is a pretty cute phase that I know won't last long.
Being the curling fan that I am, this time of year I am almost always half-glued to the tv. The Scotties was in Kingston this year and we managed to get there in person on closing weekend, just in time to see Team Homan from Ontario, in top play-off form. The Brier followed a week later, and the excitement was high in this household when the boys from the Soo, Northern Ontario, Team Jacobs took home the Brier Tankard! Now, it's going to be an exciting few weeks of World Curling viewing!

The boys and I had a little fun with a St. Patty's Day photo shoot! They were pretty silly customers but the results make my heart smile! This is the kind of silliness that is my life lately. When work doesn't have me glued to my desktop or my blackberry, these boys keep me laughing with their hilariousness each and every day.

As you can see my baby boy just keeps outgrowing his baby looks, and my big boy is becoming more mature looking with each passing day.

They are a fun little duo and on St. Patty's Day, they are definitely finding their inner leprechaun!

I hope the luck of the Irish has found you today... I am sure tomorrow we will back to looking for that rainbow and pot o'gold, but for today... we are just enjoying the richness that is every day life.
It's Valentine's Day around the world, so I am hoping this little post plus some pics will make up for the fact that I haven't blogged in exactly a month. I don't have any good excuses except to say that we've been busy living life - working, playing, and just trying ensure we are functioning family each and every day.

I do have to say, that this Valentine's Day is so sweet with my big boy in kindergarten! He is aware of this special day much more than any other year and was quite into it the other night announcing after supper 'I have to make some special hearts for my friends and you too Mommy'. Then came his demands 'I'm gonna need paper, markers, scissors, glue - can you get me that stuff?'

Yes sir!

He did cut out a bunch of hearts and filled the names for his friends on his special superhero cards. I did a little sucker photo project inspired by Pinterest - love that site, it doesn't require me to really think, you just open up the site and it basic screams 'this is what you'll do'!

Done and done.

Anyways... I had fun this morning making a heart shape breakfast for my boys, and then sending a heart shaped lunch with E to school. I am sure his 'friendship' party will be equally as exciting. My baby boy is still a bit young for understanding this occasion, but he was all about the special heart treats on the table this morning. If there is a treat to be had, this boy can definitely find it!

PC and I have a date night planned this weekend... we are off the Eric Church concert, so really looking forward to a night out and perhaps 'a drink in my hand'!

Here's a little peek of our V-Day festivities. Whether VDay is a big deal to you or just another day, I hope each of you take the time to tell someone in your life how important they are to you. Life is too short... don't pass up this opportunity.
Today, I celebrate another year in my 30s!

I have to say the number doesn't so much bother me as the new growth of grey hair I seem to be discovering more and more as I investigate in the mirror, but besides that I don't have a complaint in the world today.

I spent the weekend with the three loves of my life... and enjoyed every minute of it as we celebrated my big day. Since my birthday falls on a Monday this year, PC moved the celebration to preceding Saturday and planned out a little family fun day! It was perfect for me!

He made breakfast for all of us and then we hit E's skating lesson before heading off to the Children's Museum in Ottawa! What a great place! I have always wanted to go with the boys, but PC usually rolls his eyes at me when I suggest 'a museum' as an activity. However, this year, he really had me pegged and planned out a little adventure to the Canadian Museum of Civilization, which houses Ottawa's Children's museum. The whole outing definitely did not disappoint! We spent a couple hours exploring all the fun areas - the boys absolutely loved interacting with each stop on their passport. We capped off our visit by taking in a 3D IMAX movie! I wasn't sure how H would handle a movie, but he did awesome! We ended the night off with Mom C's famous homemade donairs, a few little birthday surprises including a new MK bag, and my ultimate fave cupcakes from The Flour Shoppe.

I don't think I could have scripted a better day to celebrate if I tried. Thank you to my one and only for such a fun day with the boys - he definitely made me smile and feel very loved and spoiled.

If my birthday celebration was any indication of how this year may unfold for me, I am looking forward to it!

Here is a little photo recap of the day's events.
How rude of me!

Don't take it personally, but I have just been too busy enjoying the holiday break with my family. It has been so. much. fun.

This is the first Christmas in a long time that I can really say that I've 'enjoyed' the holidays. I am not sure what the formula was this year, but for the first time in a very long time, I feel relaxed, rested, and ready to tackle the new year.

I think we had a few things going for us this year... two parents not working, not traveling, no school, no daycare, getting out with the kids, getting out with my husband, taking that 'extra' day off... whatever combo it was I would do it all over again - and again.

I am sitting here this morning on my extra day off, sipping my coffee, watching Ellen, and flipping through pics from the holidays. It seems liked we did a lot during the break, yet we had a lot of time at home - which is really the best!

Going into Christmas Eve I was exhausted, and run down, and just ready to throw in the towel on Christmas, but magically it all came together, and we spent Christmas Eve at our house, with my in-laws, going to church, getting ready for Santa Claus, and just enjoying some down time. Christmas morning was exciting and fun for the boys, we enjoyed Christmas brunch, a Skype date with my family, and a leisurely gift opening for all. H got in his afternoon nap and E got to explore some of his new toys before heading out to Christmas dinner at the in-laws. It was very low stress from that point out... all presents delivered and opened, and even the clean up wasn't that daunting.

The remainder of the holidays we spent together... sleigh-riding, playing board games, celebrating my brother-in-law's birthday, playing in our backyard, shoveling, having dinner with good friends, taking in the kids first OHL hockey game, public skating, and enjoying a good ol' fashioned movie night. PC and I had a wedding to attend during that break, and even that was a fun time. We got to let loose, have a few drinks, catch up with old friends, and hit the dance floor! All in all, I couldn't have asked for a better schedule of events over our two weeks of holiday time.

Today, its back to the regular routine for the rest of the family, and I am taking some extra time to finish up a few chores around home. I have to say, that as much as I will want to stay in bed tomorrow morning, I don't think I will have a problem with having to get up and get back to normal every day life.

I like the way 2013 is starting out... if I feel this good at the end of 2013, it will definitely have been a good year.

While I am thankful for the overall health and happiness of my family and friends, I can't say that I am totally upset to see 2012 come to a close. Its been a stressful year... balancing family and work life, struggling to see the upside of Budget 2012, a few unexpected visits to the hospital, and overall financial challenges of raising our young family. There have been highs and lows like any year, but in the end I am home with my three favourite people tonight and looking forward to everything 2013 has to offer.

As I ring in the new year I want to be better organized in all aspects of life, so I can inhale the little things in life... mainly just spending precious time with my boys, and being present in their lives while they are at such a fun and inspiring age.

As I look back on 2012, I am thankful for all of the little moments I have been able to share with you via this blog, and I am thankful that you continue to check up on me every once and a while (minus the crazy stalker types)!

All of the anticipation and stress of the season comes to a close tonight - your either ready or your not. I am hovering between the two right now!!

It's been a busy few months (both at home and at work) and I am looking forward to a little break after we get through the next few exciting days.

I love this time of year with the boys... their sense of excitement and anticipation is really what keeps me going. I have been up late consecutive nights for what seems like most of December. With H's birthday now behind us, it doesn't leave much time to get ready for the arrival of St. Nick - or anytime to catch up on lost sleep.

Who needs sleep... right?!

Sleep or no sleep, it really is worth it to see their faces and to listen to them recount events surrounding the season.

I hope each of you have a special Christmas Eve, whether it be with family or friends, or just time to yourself for quiet reflection. We are blessed to have been given this life... and its special occasions like these that really remind me what's important. It's not money, or things, or status... but truly to be surrounded by good people and to be loved.

I am off to spend some time with my boys... enjoy Christmas!
It was a collection of the four JK classes at his school and each class did a presentation of three numbers. It was THE CUTEST.

The teachers did a great job in coming up with fun ideas and then practicing with the classes so that they could perform in front of a large audience. I was quite impressed!

The morning of the concert as we were getting ready to go out the door, I said to E 'have fun at your concert today', and he replied a little puzzled and said 'you and Daddy are gonna be there aren't you?' and I told that we would be, and then he said 'well don't panic if you don't see me, cause we have to come in, in the dark and then there gonna put the spot light on us (insert sound affect here.... pssssssh) and then you gonna see me'!

I was laughing! The spot light definitely did come on and E went all Hollywood on us with his hand in front of his face as if to say 'no pictures please'. Eventually he adjusted to the lights and when we wasn't focused on something going on around him, he <strike>screamed</strike> sang and danced along with the class.

You will notice he is wearing his 'BLAZER' as he likes to call it. I had picked out another outfit for him to wear, but he insisted on wearing his 'BLAZER' and had to have it buttoned right up. After twenty minutes of trying to convince him that he should save that for his Christmas Eve outfit (as originally planned) I caved and let him wear it when I could see how important it was to him.

All in all, it was a very cute day, BLAZER and all. It these little moments that make me see how quickly my big boy is growing. Great job at the concert E, we love you!
Today you are two years old. You are changing by the minute, and your baby days are evaporating before our eyes.

I look back on the last 24 months and wonder where the time has gone. Two years ago we welcomed you into our family as the best Christmas gift we have ever received and today we are gathering family and friends to help you blow out your candles, again, just nine days before Christmas.

I am amazed at the little man you have become. You started walking in April and by May you were running EVERYWHERE. You've almost mastered the stairs going up them and now going down them step by step, and often times standing up (with a drink in one hand and a ball in the other). One of your favourite activities is to throw a ball from the bottom of the stairs up to the top and then laugh hysterically as it trickles back down to the bottom. You could literally do that for hours!

You are a quick boy... if you are thinking about something, you are doing it almost immediately - like getting a knife out of the top drawer to cut open your frozen yogurt treat. We never had to baby proof the house too much with your brother, but you've ensured that we didn't miss that step with you!

You are now 33 inches tall, and a solid 29 lbs. You have a big appetite. You are not so keen on veggies, but are definitely a meat and potatoes kind of guy. You often eat up your meal quite quickly and then eye your brother's plate beside you as if to say 'are you done yet?'

You are a demanding little man... when you want something, you want it - NOW! If we decide to tell you NO, you take it very hard, but then have this way about you to plead your case on why you have to have something your way.

You are stubborn, yet caring. When you've done something wrong or not nice, we encourage you to say sorry, and you give us the eyes and that lip, but eventually you do make your way over to offer a hug to the person or thing you've done wrong to. Its one of the cutest things to witness (on a daily basis)!

You've started talking a lot more in the recent months. You definitely have a lot of your own non-audible conversations in a day, but more and more the words are coming together. Our favourite expression of conversation is when we try to put you bed, and you immediately demand 'up, book, rock' in that order! You know what you want, and if your words aren't understood, you resort to a very firm finger point (often pointing towards 20 things, but we eventually narrow it down to 1 and tell you the word for that).

You love to say 'uh-oh' and are getting really good with with 'peas' and 'tank-you'. When we tell you you can't do something for a specific reason you say 'oh' with such cuteness, as if to say, 'I had no idea but thanks for letting me know' - and then you do it anyways! Your favourite animal is a 'woof-woof' and you really enjoy the show 'Jake & the Neverland Pirates' - hence the theme for your second birthday party. When the music to that show comes on, look out dance moves! You love to listen to music and dance with your brother. You've got some pretty cool moves that ladies enjoy!

You are a shy boy! In new situations or in meeting new people, your immediate reaction is hide your head, or cover your face. It takes a while to warm you up to new things but once you are comfortable with a situation, its hard to break you away from it. You have an infectious laugh. When you think something is funny or someone makes you laugh, you usually have the whole room laughing right a long with you.

You like to help out and if we give you a job to do, you are very enthusiastic about it. Sometimes you initiate the jobs on your own - like putting away dishes out of the dishwasher or swiffering the floors!

You are still a good little sleeper... some nights you like to stay up later than your brother but you don't mind sleeping every chance you get. On the weekends and in the evenings you love to play outside but now that the snow is here, you aren't such a fan of getting ready in all the winter gear.

As you embark on your third year, I want you to know how special you are to our family, and how much you are loved. I know you will always be the baby of the family, and I will cling to any opportunity to savour those moments, but at the same time I can't wait to see what this year has in store for you. You are the spark plug of our family, you get us going and bring an element of sass and attitude that we were definitely missing! We love your silliness, and love your determination to succeed!

We are so proud of the little boy you are, we love you so much and are so thankful for the joy you bring to our lives. Thank you for being you... and for being my baby boy! Daddy and I love you today and always. Hugs and kisses little man.

Love Mom
xxoo
Anyone not from Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding area may not appreciate this as much as I did, but for those of you from 'the Soo', you will laugh too! For the record, my sister lives in Sault Ste. Marie.

The conversation started something like this...

Me: Emery your walking like an elephant today.
E: What does that mean?

Me: Your heavy on your feet, like an elephant (boom boom boom).
E: That's not an elephant, elephants are quiet.

Me: No, elephants walk heavy. We'll have to go to the zoo sometime so you can see.
E: Ya. We'll have to call Auntie and she can take us.

Me: Oh ya, did Auntie say she wanted to go to the zoo.
E: No, Auntie lives in the zoo!

E: (thinking about it)... ah ... well I don't think she lives in a zoo, but something like that, eh?
Me: (thinking about it - laughing) ... why would you think Auntie lives a zoo?

E: Cause you always say, lets call her in the zoo.
Me: (dying of laughter) oh... you mean the Soo, not the zoo.

E: (laughing) ya that's what I said... the zoo! Does she live near elephants?
Me: Haha - I don't think so, but ... ya never know in the Soo!

E had no doubt in his mind that he was going to be Spider-Man this year. He's been trying on his costume daily since he received it! H, on the other hand, didn't express any opinions on what he wanted to be, but PC and I felt the One-eyed Monster was appropriate - and really, couldn't you just squeeze the poop right out of that little face. He was quite upset getting into his costume, but then realized how silly he looked in the mirror and he was all for it. What a boy.

Spider-Man has been slinging webs since his birthday and the best moment have been when we were outside taking these pictures last week and two older boys riding by on their bikes randomly shouted 'Hey Spider-Man'! He ripped off his mask and said 'Oh my gosh... they thought I was really Spider-Man Mommy'. Some moments in life you just can't script!

I am sure these two characters will have fun knocking on doors this evening! I know I will have a great time witnessing it! I love the extra enthusiasm these holidays bring to my life because of the kiddies. It does make all of the time and effort that we put into getting ready for these special days worth it when you see how much joy it brings for them.

Mark is battling stage 4 melonoma (skin-cancer). His story gave me chills because he has a beautiful young family and he has already been through this battle once before. He needs the support of everyone - and is truly relying on the kindness of strangers to get him and his family over this major hurdle.

Please visit the link below, and if you feel compelled to make a donation he is the kind of guy that will be forever grateful.

Help Mark Heal... and please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers in the months ahead.
I remember when I was younger and thinking sixty was old, but now to be in my thirties and have my Mom turning sixty, it doesn't seem old at all! She looks great and now that her and my Dad are both retired, I think they both seem more youthful and relaxed than ever before.

My mom is not an over-the-top person... she is generally easy to please and agreeable, but she does make it known that she is not fond of being the center of attention - at all. With this milestone birthday approaching, I knew she would not want a big surprise party because she is just not that kinda gal, but I didn't want to let the occasion slip by without much mention of it. After all she is SIXTY, and that deserves some kind of celebration in my (humble) opinion!

About six months ago I stumbled upon a link where a daughter did this fabulous project for her father... and it got me thinking that it was an awesome idea to put in my back pocket for a special occasion in the future. Well fast forward and although I was in the middle of planning E's birthday party, I thought, what the heck, I think I can pull off 'my version' of the this project too.

So... I took stock of addresses that I had from my wedding folder, and then enlisted my Dad to do some undercover work with my Mom's address book (which thank gawd she still uses the old fashioned pen and paper style book thrown in the junk drawer, my Dad had no problem getting the info I needed). I emailed my invitation lady and got her to whip me up a quick request card informing people what I needed them to do, and BAM! ... I was off and running.

I complied a list of sixty candidates that I thought would be happy to participate and that she'd be happy hear from, if not surprised in some cases. I located some colourful note cards and envelopes and got my stamping supplies out. After a few evenings of dedicated prep work, I had sixty cards ready to mail out.

I really wasn't sure exactly how this was going to come together after I dropped the invitations in the mail, but when my Dad was at my house for Thanksgiving, he mentioned that he gets the mail most days, so he could collect the incoming cards as they arrived and save them up until today. He took this job seriously, and did not disappoint as this morning he was able to present her with a mail bag full of wishes and I know she has enjoyed reading each one.

Thank you to everyone who participated and made this birthday project a total success.

To my Mom... you are a special woman who means a lot me. You are also a special Grandma to my two boys. I am so happy that you continue to play an active and present part in our lives, and I really can't thank you enough for always being at my side no matter what the obstacles or success stories have been. I hope you enjoy this milestone today... and PC, the boys, and I look forward to helping you celebrate many more years of health and happiness.

Love you and miss you.
Yesterday, he came home beaming with the news that today would be his day and that he had to 'prepare a coupla things' for his class.

Included in his bag was a note from the teacher informing us that he would be the 'L'ami du jour' and a request to have us help him fill out a some information about himself (in French) for the class and to practice the sentences he would have to say this morning to introduce himself.

E was pretty excited to get down to business but when we opened the special folder that came home with him, the booklet he was to fill in was no where to be found. I am not sure if the teacher forgot to include it (which E claims) or if he misplaced it somewhere between school and home. Either way we had to improvise... but we got the job done!

The one activity was to draw a picture of himself above the sentence 'Je suis un garçon'. I was pretty impressed at how he followed instructions to draw his head and then added in the facial details with minimal guidance. He also had the French sentences down pat before we even started to practice them. He's retaining much more French than I had anticipated at this stage and the good news for me is that its helping me to practice my outdated French speaking skills too.

I am excited to hear how his day went today, I am sure he'll be bummed that this special recognition didn't last longer than a day!

This was the first year that I decided to downsize his celebration into a small party of friends and then a family party. This was also the first year that E was in school, and that opens up a whole new world of friend selection. I did not want to invite the whole class or even half the class, but there were a few names that E kept mentioning so we limited it six friends and started the planning. E was very eager to have his buddies over to play at his house so we decided to do a few games, with cake and presents, on a Saturday afternoon at our house.

I searched around for some fun Spider-Man themed ideas and found a cool no-sew cape pattern online. E loves wearing capes around the house to do anything so I figured he might enjoy a spider themed cape for his special day - and if E had one, all of his friends should have one too!

The capes were probably the bulk of the work... but honestly I would do it again! They turned out better than I had envisioned and both my boys are still wearing them to play superhero games at home. E was grinning ear to ear when he put his on... and that made my day.

The rest of the party was low key... we did an easy 'Don't sit on Spidey' game and then a 'Pin Spidey on the Web' game. They were straight forward and easy to pull together. I had the cake done by a new gal near our house (Jo's Frosting's) and it was beyond delicious! It was a red velvet cream cheese cake and was very good not to mention the aaaaaaaaaamazing Spider-Man detail she created on her own. I did some cupcakes on the side with some fun toppers that I was able to download online - add in some balloon trees and the party was ready to roll.

It turned out be a beautiful day out for the party, so we got the formalities wrapped up in enough time to enjoy some outdoor play. E was seriously in heaven running circles outside with his friends. I was happy to see that we were able to achieve what he wanted for his special day.

E concluded at the end of the day that it was 'my bestest birthday ever' so that made it worth the effort entirely. I sent cupcakes to the school on his actually birthday to celebrate with his class and then finally we did a small family party on Thanksgiving weekend. He was over the moon to be spoiled with three special celebrations and he is still talking about the events and reading all of the fun cards he received.

The Spider-Man party is now in the books, but the love for Spidey in our house has grown enormously with all of the new Spider-Man gear E has received. Every night from 5 to 7 you can catch one happy boy slinging webs with a giant smile thanks to Spidey and friends!
On E's birthday its tradition that we release a helium balloon into the sky as way to celebrate with those who are no longer with us here on earth, but to the many guardian angels that we know are celebrating with him.

This year was no different from past years, except that E's excitement to participate in this tradition was ten-fold. He was dancing around at the thought of letting the balloons go and even remarked 'I hope you guys are ready for this'!

We let the balloons go.... and while they may have got snagged on the neighbours tree for a couple a minutes, they were high in the sky in no time! I'm not sure how E truly felt but I know I had a warm feeling after they disappeared and the sentimental side of me was shedding a tear.

Thank you to all of our guardian angels up above for continuing to keep this little boy and his baby brother safe for another amazing year. We love you and miss you everyday.
This year is no different from any other in terms of what I am thankful for.... family and good friendships mean the world to me and I am so thankful to have an abundance of both in my life. I love my family and friends, and I hope health and happiness continues to follow them throughout their lives.

And it goes without saying, but my little turkeys and their Daddy are at the top of my thanksgiving list! Love my boys and all of their shenanigans! They are getting so big and very busy, and they definitely keep me on my toes, but I would not have it any other way. When I think about all of the happiness they bring to my life, I am truly thankful. They are the best!
Emery... my sweet, loving, growing boy, today you are 4.

Turning four is a milestone you've have hit with stride. I can't quite grasp the fact that I have a four year old boy, but you are bouncing off the walls at the thought of being four!

I tried to help you put your shoes on this morning before school, but you politely reminded me 'its okay Mommy, I don't need your help anymore'. This has been the underlying theme over the last year for you. You have gained so much independence and are very proudly doing many things on your own without requiring much help from anyone.

You finished your pre-school program in the spring and it was easy to see from that experience that you were ready to take on kindergarten. You've eased into the school routine so well. Any concerns Mommy and Daddy may have had were quickly erased when you bounced off that bus at the end of your first day grinning ear to ear.

You make these big milestones look like just another day, and Mommy and Daddy feel lucky to have a boy who takes everything in stride.

You absolutely, one hundred percent, love school. You love it so much that when we announce its the weekend (with tons of enthusiasm) you start to pout and say 'but I don't wanna quit school'. We can't help but laugh (and wonder if you'll be this enthusiastic in 10 years)!

You have made new friends at school and are starting to develop a little social life. I love listening to you recount your conversations with your school buddies (Alex, Ceilib, Gabe, and Luke) of the games you were playing at recess and who said something funny or did something inappropriate. So far (a month into school) your teachers have all reported how well your doing.

This past year you started swimming lessons and between hanging out at the cottage and Grandma & Grandpa C's pool, you were a little fish! You also started playing soccer this past year. You had a blast and although the summer was hot, you didn't mind running the field and scoring goals all. season. long. You were sad when soccer was over, but then skating started again, and with new skates to start the season off, you are ready to gain some speed this year. Road hockey is also another favourite of yours and you have lots of fun playing in the driveway with the neighbours.

You had an amazing summer of fun at the cottage with Grandma & Grandpa C and travelling north to Thessalon to visit Grandma & Grandpa B. You didn't mind being spoiled by both sets of grandparents, and playing the reassuring big brother to Hudson as he experienced new things for the first time.

You are 38 lbs and 44 inches tall now. You have taken a real growth spurt in the past couple of months and have grown out of a lot of clothes. You are into all things superheros now, your favourite one being Spider-Man. We often call you 'Emery Parker' - Spider-Man's brother! You requested a Spider-Man theme for your birthday party this year, and were so excited to have your friends over to play at your house. You have asked for a Spider-Man Transformer for you birthday, and I am sure you will get that and more!

In addition to Spider-Man, you like to watch Octonots, Bubble Guppies, Batman, and Man-tracker (with Daddy). This past year you went to your first movie theater movie and thought it was pretty AWESOME! You like playing transformers, and anything that lets you dress up in a cape. You are big into navigating your way around the computer. You often ask to watch a show on the YouTube, and if we can't find one suitable, you tell us with simplicity 'should probably download it then'! You make us laugh every day.

You have always been a caring individual, but the older you get, the more we see how truly empathetic you are to others. When someone is hurt or needs helps you are right there to tell them 'its going to be okay' or 'I can help you'. You do get in trouble from time to time, but you like to explain why you thought it was okay to do what you were doing, or tell us what you thought was going to happen vs. what actually happened. You say the words 'actually' and 'totally' a lot! You love to chat... (like your Mommy)! Daddy thinks you have a word quota that you MUST hit every day before you can fall asleep, its somewhere between 25 and 30,000 words a day! No wonder you have no trouble falling asleep at night!

I love that you can express yourself to others, and that you maintain your manners often without prompting. This past year, you and Hudson have really learned how to play together. You engage him in so many games, and really make it fun for him. You know when to give in and when to stand your ground. Your genuine nature is sweet, caring and respectful and you make both Daddy and I so proud on a daily basis.

This year I wish for you smooth and exciting adventures, filled with love and happiness each and every day. I hope you realize how special you are to Mommy and Daddy, and that the day we welcomed you into our family was truly life changing in the best way possible.

Have an amazing birthday my big boy and keep enriching our family with your kind and endearing ways.

Lots of love today and always.
Mom
xoxo
Hard to imagine that seven years ago, PC and I were only starting out on a journey that has already provided us with so much. As we celebrate seven years of marriage today, I am just in awe of everything we have accomplished together - and its ONLY been seven years.

I get excited at this time every year because its like playing Monopoly and going past GO... only instead of collecting $200, we are collecting another year of 'happily ever after'.We might purchase somethings along the way, or sell-off a few others, but were buying and selling together, and as along as we're avoiding going to jail - I'd say were doing okay!

This past year has been about achieving a balance. With two busy boys in our lives, we rarely find time to for the two of us but I think the point is that we still enjoy those outings when we do get to be together as just a couple - sans kids. Our boys have provided us with so many laughs this past year... and its made us both see that raising a family, although tough at times, can be equally rewarding and then some.

PC, still the keeper of many titles: friend, lover, and partner for life! Thank you for putting up with my crap, and your welcome for putting up with yours!

I love you.
Happy Anniversary.
So it's Friday morning, and I've over slept by fifteen minutes... which is not the end of the world but its the fifteen minutes of the morning that I have to myself before the rest of the house wakes, where I organize my thoughts, my day, and figure out what's for dinner. I'm am just wiping the sleep out my eyes when in bounces E to the bathroom, wide awake and chatting away (like most mornings).

As I say good morning to him, he stripes out of his pajama bottoms and goes for a pee. I haven't even processed what day of the week it is, when he poses the following question:

Mommy, do girls have penis' too?

Me: (still wondering what day of the week it is)... Ahh no.
E: (not about to drop it) How come?

Me: (man I could use a coffee right now)... Because boys and girls are made differently.
E: So girls don't have penis'? (looking at me dead serious).

Me: No.
E: Really? So girls can't ever have penis'?

Me: (not even debating the long answer on this one)... No.
E: You mean its im-paw-sa-ble?

Me: (given that's its 6:15 am) Yes, its impossible.
E: Okay... can I get dressed now?

Me: (laughing) Yes.

I debated pulling out the Varsity Blues line of 'penis penis penis, vagina vagina vagina'... the one that rings through my head every time anyone says penis; but since it was a school day, and we are only a few weeks into school, I gasped at the thought of E sharing with the teacher or his friends something along the lines of '...like my Mom always says: penis penis penis'!!

After my brains kicked in about thirty minutes later, I was thankful that the discussion ended with a simply yes and no answer. I have feeling the next time this subject comes up, I'm not going to get off so easy!
